How the Tipping Bucket Telemetry Works

The Davis Instruments tipping rain gauge is a mechanical unit. It uses a tiny reed switch that closes a contact every time the bucket tips, representing exactly 0.01 inches (0.2 mm) of rain.

To digitize this, we connect the sensor leads directly to the digital pulse counter input on a Dragino LT-22222-L LoRaWAN controller.

We also mount a Dragino LHT65N temperature and humidity sensor right in the crop canopy to track the microclimate and watch for frost events.

When the bucket tips, the Dragino controller counts the pulse and transmits the telemetry. The Simply Mobility software engine decodes the pulse, multiplies it by 0.2 mm, and updates your dashboard instantly.
